USCIS fees will be increasing next month, and any applications not received by USCIS before April 1, 2024 will be subject to the new, higher fees. This fee increase impacts both family-based and employment-based cases.
What is known as a "one-step" adjustment of status, most commonly a green card petition for the spouse or parents of a US citizen, currently has USCIS fees of $1760. As of April 1, 2024, this will increase to $3005. The most significant change is that the work and travel permits, currently included at no additional cost with an adjustment of status, will have fees associated with each one, even when filed at the same time as the rest of the green card applications.
Similarly, the premium processing available in several employment-based petitions will increase from $2500 to $2805. The I-129, used by employers to petition for H1B employees, will increase from $460 to $780.
USCIS is one of the few federal agencies that relies on its fees rather than taxes to fund itself, so the hope is that this increased funding will help to decrease the lengthy backlogs and improve customer service.
